At Northwest Family Law, we help parents in Washington with every aspect of child support: establishing new orders, modifying existing ones, enforcing unpaid support, addressing daycare and school costs, and guiding families through post-secondary support obligations.
Child support is one of the most important and most contested issues in family law. In Washington, the average annual cost of infant care exceeds $21,000, according to Child Care Aware, making daycare one of the largest expenses factored into support orders.
Our clients trust us because we pair deep legal knowledge with genuine care. As one client shared, “Northwest Family Law is an exceptional family law firm… Professional, compassionate and knowledgeable. I definitely recommend them to anyone needing family law services.” — Judy Jones
What Is Child Support and Why It Matters in Washington
Child support is a court-ordered payment that one parent makes to the other to help cover the costs of raising their child after a separation or divorce. These payments are meant to provide for essentials such as housing, food, clothing, medical care, and education.
Cases are often handled in the county superior courts, like King County Superior Court in Seattle, Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, or Spokane County Superior Court, or administratively through the Division of Child Support (DCS). These institutions enforce orders, process modifications, and confirm that payments are collected.
Washington’s economy is diverse: tech employers like Microsoft in King County, aerospace through Boeing in Everett, agriculture in Yakima and Wenatchee, and military families stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) all present very different income profiles. These variations often lead to disputes over calculation and fairness.
In short, child support in Washington is a reflection of how real families live, work, and raise children across a diverse state. Getting it right matters for both parents and children.

How Child Support Is Calculated in Washington
In Washington, child support is calculated using the Washington State Child Support Schedule (RCW 26.19).
The process begins with each parent’s gross monthly income, which may include wages, overtime, bonuses, commissions, self-employment earnings, and even stock options or military allowances. Courts then apply the schedule to determine a basic support obligation, adjusted for the number and ages of children.
From there, judges or the Division of Child Support (DCS) may add proportional expenses for daycare, school programs, medical coverage, and extracurricular activities.
Courts can also deviate from the standard when fairness requires it. For instance, if one parent supports children from another household, or if a child’s needs exceed ordinary expenses.
Because Washington’s economy is so diverse, a uniform formula still produces very different outcomes depending on local costs and income types. That’s why having a lawyer who understands how courts interpret the schedule in different counties is critical.
Modification & Enforcement of Child Support Orders
Child support orders in Washington are not static, they can be changed or enforced when circumstances require it.
Modification
A parent may request a modification if income shifts significantly, such as job loss in Spokane, a promotion at Amazon in Seattle, or seasonal work changes in Yakima’s agriculture sector. Courts also allow adjustments when children move into new stages of schooling or incur higher costs, like transitioning from daycare to private school.
Enforcement
If payments fall behind, the Division of Child Support (DCS) can step in with tools like wage withholding, driver’s license suspension, or even contempt actions filed in county superior courts.
